Theodore Roosevelt is shown here at a public appearance in Worcester, Massachusetts, caught mid-speech in a half-length view, turned toward his right as though addressing a crowd. Photographs of him on the lecture and campaign circuit were common in the early 1900s, when he was president and a figure of wide public interest. The picture belongs to a period when newspapers and magazines depended on such prints to carry the image of a national leader to readers who would never see him in person. Its date of about 1902 places it during his first full term, when his speaking tours were frequent and closely followed.
