Shown from the waist up and seated at a desk, Roosevelt faces to the right in a pose that suggests a working setting rather than a formal standing portrait. The picture is dated September 11, 1905, just days after the Treaty of Portsmouth was signed on September 5 to end the Russo-Japanese War. Roosevelt's mediation of that settlement earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1906, the first American to receive it. Portraits like this one were widely reproduced in newspapers and magazines, which helped shape how Americans saw their president at the height of his public profile.
