Few places are more tied to the Rough Riders than San Antonio, Texas, where the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry gathered in 1898 before shipping out for Cuba. In this stereograph, President Theodore Roosevelt stands with army officers and former Rough Riders at a reunion there, a reminder that the regiment's fame had grown large enough by the mid-1900s to draw its veterans back together. Underwood & Underwood issued many such stereo cards for home viewers, so the scene reached parlors across the country. The record's date and event details are unconfirmed, but the image captures how the Spanish-American War had become part of Roosevelt's public identity.
