In San Antonio, Texas, where the Rough Riders had trained before sailing for Cuba in 1898, President Theodore Roosevelt greets former members of the volunteer cavalry regiment he had helped raise. The stereograph was issued by Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for its paired views, which were viewed through a stereoscope to create a sense of depth. Such reunions kept alive the memory of the regiment's charge up San Juan Hill, an episode that did much to build Roosevelt's national reputation.
