Here Theodore Roosevelt rides alongside Frank P. Hayes and another member of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the regiment better known as the Rough Riders. The catalog record lists Hayes's identification with a question mark, so his name is less certain than Roosevelt's. Roosevelt helped raise the regiment in 1898 after resigning as assistant secretary of the Navy. It drew heavily on cowboys, ranchers and lawmen from the western territories, along with college athletes from the East. The unit fought in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, and Roosevelt's role in the assault on San Juan Hill made him a national figure.
