Roosevelt appears here in the middle of the street, with Mayor William Jay Gaynor on one side and Cornelius Vanderbilt on the other, his hand stretched out to greet a Rough Rider in the procession. The moment belongs to the June 1910 parade that welcomed Roosevelt home to New York after his months-long travels in Africa and Europe. Gaynor had been mayor since 1909, so the picture pairs the city's official welcome with the personal loyalty of the men who had served under Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War.
