Three prominent New Yorkers share the frame here: Mayor William J. Gaynor, former president Theodore Roosevelt, and Cornelius Vanderbilt, all on Fifth Avenue. The caption card dates the picture to June 1910, a few weeks after Roosevelt returned from his African hunting expedition and European tour, when the city gave him a large welcome parade. The carriage tracings point to the horse-drawn era, when the avenue's leading figures still traveled it this way before automobiles took over the street. Because the date and identities come from an older caption card, they are worth checking against other sources.
