Here Theodore Roosevelt stands in an open carriage, returning the salute of a crowd as he leaves the Hotel des Indes in The Hague. The photograph dates to about 1910, when Roosevelt was touring Europe after leaving the presidency and drew large public attention wherever he went. The "Copyright by American Press Association" notice shows it was made for wire-service distribution, so it likely appeared in American newspapers within days of the event. It is a useful record of how a former president was received abroad, with a crowd gathered on the street to see him off.
