Theodore Roosevelt stands in an open carriage in this half-length view, turned slightly to the left, with the rig's canopy and fittings framing him against the background. The print dates to about 1903, when Roosevelt was in the second year of his presidency after taking office following William McKinley's assassination in 1901. Presidential travel by carriage was still common in that period, before automobiles became a regular part of official life, and images like this one were widely circulated to show the president in public. Its Library of Congress holding makes it a useful record of how Roosevelt presented himself to the public at the start of his time in the White House.
