Theodore Roosevelt stands in this half-length view on a railway platform, turned to the left, in a portrait that dates to about 1913. That was the year he left the presidency behind after two terms, having served from 1901 to 1909, and had begun to look for new ways to stay in public life. He had also broken with the Republican Party and was preparing to run again on the Progressive ticket in 1912, so the period was one of political reinvention for him. Photographs of Roosevelt from these years show a man still known for his energy and his vigorous public speaking, and this image, a single print from the Library of Congress, captures him in that later stage of his career.
