Roosevelt is shown on the rear platform of a railroad car, addressing a crowd gathered below, a scene that captures the whistle-stop style of campaigning he helped popularize. Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for mass-produced stereographs, made this view around 1907, when Roosevelt was president and traveled extensively by rail. Stereographs like this one were sold in sets to households across the country, so the picture offers a window onto how a president reached ordinary citizens before radio and newsreels became common.
