Roosevelt and his fellow officers of the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, the regiment better known as the Rough Riders, are shown mounted on horseback on this stereo card. The regiment was raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War, and Roosevelt, then a lieutenant colonel and later its colonel, became one of its most famous figures after the unit fought at San Juan Hill in Cuba that July. The card was issued by the commercial publisher Strohmeyer & Wyman, whose stereographs were viewed in parlors through a stereoscope, so the image was meant to give viewers a three-dimensional sense of the men and their mounts. Cards like this helped turn the regiment's officers into national celebrities.
