Roosevelt's Rough Rider past meets Clifford Berryman's bear in this cartoon, a pairing that points directly to the teddy bear cartoons. Berryman, a Washington newspaper cartoonist, drew the bear after Roosevelt declined to shoot a captured bear on a Mississippi hunting trip in late 1902, and the figure became so popular that toy makers soon took up the name. The Library's record suggests the piece ran in the Washington Star, but its date is only bracketed between 1902 and 1940, so the publication details should be read as provisional.
