Theodore Roosevelt, then a colonel, stands with his Rough Riders at the crest of the hill they took during the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba in July 1898. The 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, a regiment raised for the Spanish-American War, had been recruited from cowboys, ranchers, and former college athletes, and Roosevelt's leadership of it made him a national figure. The photograph was made by William Dinwiddie, a Washington-based photographer who documented the war and its aftermath. Its clear view of the men at the summit gives a sense of the rough, hard-won ground the regiment had just crossed.
