Theodore Roosevelt stands at the crest of San Juan Hill with the men of his volunteer cavalry regiment, the Rough Riders, gathered around him after their assault on the Spanish position in July 1898. The Rough Riders were a volunteer unit recruited in part from cowboys, ranchers, and college athletes, and Roosevelt, then serving as their lieutenant colonel, led the charge up the slope during the Battle of San Juan Hill near Santiago de Cuba. The photograph was made by William Dinwiddie, a Washington-based photographer who documented the war and its aftermath, and its composition ties the battle to the figure who would soon make the regiment famous. Roosevelt's military service in the brief Spanish-American War gave him a national profile that helped carry him to the vice presidency later that year.
