Taken at Montauk Point, the camp at the eastern tip of Long Island, this portrait shows Theodore Roosevelt in the late summer of 1898, after the Rough Riders returned from Cuba. The regiment was held at Montauk while it recovered from fever, and Roosevelt, who had led the cavalry up San Juan Hill that July, was by then a celebrated colonel. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent photographer of the era, made the image, and the cyanotype process gives it the deep blue tone typical of the period's contact prints.
