Theodore Roosevelt's name headlines this poster, which advertised his firsthand account of the Rough Riders in Scribner's Magazine. Roosevelt had left his post as assistant secretary of the Navy to help raise a volunteer cavalry regiment for the Spanish-American War, and his men became famous for their charge up San Juan Hill in Cuba in July 1898. The poster, signed by H.C. Christy, was meant to draw readers to the January issue that carried the story. It shows how quickly a war hero's name became a selling point for popular magazines.
