Roosevelt is shown here on horseback at the head of his volunteer cavalry, the regiment better known as the Rough Riders, with the regimental flag carried beside him. The unit was raised in 1898 for the Spanish-American War, and Roosevelt, then a colonel, led it in the fighting around San Juan Hill in Cuba that summer. The charge there made him a national figure and helped carry him into the governor's office in New York and later the presidency. Note the mix of uniform and rugged dress among the men, which reflected how the regiment was equipped and recruited.
