Few magazine posters of the late 1890s advertised a battle so recent, and this one promoted the October 1898 issue of *Scribner's* with Richard Harding Davis's account of the fighting at San Juan Hill in Cuba. The battle took place on July 1, 1898, during the Spanish-American War, when American troops attacked Spanish defenses near Santiago de Cuba. Davis, one of the best-known war correspondents of the day, was on the ground and wrote the piece, and the illustrator credited as Christy supplied the artwork. The gallery board groups the picture with images of Theodore Roosevelt, whose Rough Riders took part in the charge that made the hill famous.
