Tompkins Harrison Matteson's painting shows George Washington delivering his first inaugural address on the balcony of Federal Hall, the former city hall in lower Manhattan where he took the oath of office on April 30, 1789. The engraving by Horace Sadd, issued by John Neale in 1849, reproduces the scene from a picture Matteson painted for the print, and it includes the text of the speech in letterpress. Such mid-century prints were popular as patriotic images, and this one shows how Americans of the 1840s imagined the nation's founding moment.
