Trumbull's portrait of Washington was painted in 1780, while the American war was still being fought, and this print carries the portrait to a London audience. Valentine Green, who held the title of mezzotint engraver to the King and to the Elector Palatine, translated the painted canvas into a mezzotint, a method that builds images from a densely roughened plate and gives smooth gradations of light and shadow. The sheet was published in London on January 15, 1781, by Green from his Newman Street address, a reminder that images of the American commander were circulating in Britain even as the two nations were at war. Viewers may note how the engraving renders the uniform and face in soft tones, a characteristic of mezzotint portraiture of the period.
