The title on this mezzotint lists Washington's offices in full: commander in chief of the armies of the United States and president of the Convention of 1787. Charles Willson Peale both painted and engraved the image, using mezzotint, which builds soft tones by roughening a copper plate and scraping it smooth in places. Issued in 1787, the year delegates met in Philadelphia to draft the Constitution, it presents Washington as a statesman as well as a war hero. The sheet was given to the Library of Congress in 1913 by Jane Bethune Craig Hawkins, a great-granddaughter of General John Neville of Virginia.
