Engraved by William Sharp and published in London by John Stockdale on February 22, 1783, this print presents George Washington with the title "commander in chief of ye armies of ye United States of America," a designation that a London publisher would have found striking while the war was still unresolved. The peace negotiations that would end the Revolutionary War were underway that winter, and Washington's army was still encamped in New York and New Jersey. The engraving's archaic spelling of "the" and its etching-and-engraving technique reflect the conventions of late eighteenth-century British portrait prints, which circulated widely among readers following the American conflict.
