This mezzotint is distinctive because the American painter Edward Savage both painted and engraved it ("pinx et sculp"), and it was published in London rather than in the United States. Its date, June 25, 1793, falls during Washington's second term as president, when European printsellers were eager for images of the American leader. Mezzotint, which builds the image from a roughened copper plate, produces soft gradations of tone that suit the sitter's dignified, reserved expression. Savage's version was one of several engraved likenesses of Washington circulated in the 1790s, and it shows how his image traveled across the Atlantic.
