Rather than a fresh likeness, this lithograph reproduces an existing portrait painting, and its date is given as about 1828. Lithography, a method of printing from images drawn on stone, reached American printmakers only in the late 1810s, and by the later 1820s it made affordable likenesses of Washington widely available. Nearly three decades after his death in 1799, prints like this served as memorials as much as portraits, keeping the first president's face before a public eager to honor him.
