Printed on blue paper, this 1833 sheet advertises a book of Washington's own accounting of his expenses from 1775 to 1783. Washington accepted command of the Continental Army without a salary and asked only to be reimbursed for what he spent, so his handwritten ledger became a well-known record of a commander who refused pay. The sheet was made by the New York firm Buel & Michelin for John Hutchings, a Brooklyn bookseller, whose name on the label shows how such advertisements were used to sell Washington-related titles beyond the major cities.
