Washington's name appears here in an unexpected setting: a certificate from the New York Marine Society naming him an honorary member in 1783. The society had been formed in New York in the late 1760s to aid mariners and their families, and the honor came the same year the British finally left the city after their long occupation. The piece is a printed certificate rather than a portrait, which shows how civic and fraternal groups used engraved forms to recognize prominent men. It also reminds viewers that Washington's standing as a wartime commander was being publicly celebrated before he became the first president.
