Dated to the day, this chromolithograph shows Washington's entry into New York on November 25, 1783, the day British troops finally left the city after the long occupation. The scene was a turning point: the Continental Army returned to a city it had lost in 1776, and the war's last major British position was surrendered without a fight. Published in Philadelphia in 1860, the print was made more than seventy years after the event, when interest in Revolutionary heroes was growing. Its color lithography, printed by P.S. Duval & Son, shows how popular history was packaged for American homes in the years before the Civil War.
