Unlike the many views of the finished obelisk, this lithograph shows the moment the cornerstone of the Washington Monument was set, a ceremony held in the capital on July 4, 1848. Benjamin Brown French, Grand Master of the Freemasons of the District of Columbia, presided over the Masonic rites, reflecting the order's central role in the monument's early planning. The print dates from about 1893, decades after the event, so it reconstructs the scene rather than recording it on the spot. It was issued by the Knapp Company, a lithography firm in New York.
