The scene shows the Battle of the Monongahela, fought in July 1755 near present-day Pittsburgh, where a British column under General Edward Braddock was ambushed by French forces and their Native allies. Washington, then a young colonel serving as an aide to Braddock, rode through the fire carrying orders, and he later wrote of having had several horses shot from under him and his coat pierced by balls. This Paris color lithograph, printed by the Lemercier firm around 1854, reproduces a painting by Stearns and reflects the mid-19th-century taste for heroic scenes of Washington's early military career.
