Few Washington scenes on this board show his private life, and this color lithograph depicts his marriage to Martha Dandridge Custis, a widow with two young children, in colonial Virginia. The couple wed on January 6, 1759, at her home, the White House plantation on the Pamunkey River in New Kent County. The print reproduces a painting by Stearns and was issued in Paris by the firm Lemercier around 1854. Its title, *The Citizen*, presents Washington as a private gentleman before his public career.
