Few likenesses of George Washington have been copied as often as the portrait Gilbert Stuart painted from life in the 1790s, and this mezzotint reproduces it for buyers in New York in 1844. H.S. Sadd engraved the plate, which was published at the Albion Office and printed by J. Neale. Mezzotint, a tonal method that builds soft gradations of light and shadow with a rocking tool, was well suited to the faces of the period's portraits and made copies of famous likenesses affordable. Worth noticing is how the engraver turned Stuart's oil paint into black-and-white tone, giving Washington's features a rich, almost painterly finish.
