Unlike many images of Washington, this wood engraving focuses on the crossing itself, the moment before the attack on Trenton, New Jersey. Thomas Sully painted the scene, and John Nagle Gimbrede engraved it for the *New-York Mirror*, where it appeared in the September 24, 1842, issue, facing page 305. Washington led his troops across the icy Delaware on the night of December 25, 1776, and surprised the Hessian garrison at Trenton the next morning, a victory that revived the Continental Army's hopes after a difficult autumn. Periodicals of the 1840s often relied on wood engravings like this one to bring famous episodes of the Revolution to a wide readership.
