A. W. Elson & Co. of Boston copyrighted this 1898 print, and its genre listing marks it as a reproduction of a painting rather than an original photograph or engraving. The scene is Washington's crossing of the Delaware River on the night of December 25-26, 1776, when the Continental Army moved across icy water to attack Hessian troops at Trenton, New Jersey. The subject was a favorite for late nineteenth-century American publishers, who reproduced it to celebrate the Revolution and its commander. Its dramatic lighting and crowded boat make it a useful example of how the event was remembered in that period.
