What sets this print apart is its focus on the rowboats, a detail the subject headings single out alongside the Trenton battle. It is a color photomechanical reproduction credited to the artist Henry Mosler, and it was copyrighted around 1912 to 1913, when reproductions like this helped put popular history scenes in schools and homes. Washington's army crossed the icy Delaware on the night of December 25, 1776, and attacked the Hessian garrison at Trenton the next morning, a surprise victory that revived the Continental cause after a hard winter. Later pictures of the crossing, especially Emanuel Leutze's large 1851 canvas, did much to shape how Americans remembered that night.
