Currier & Ives issued this hand-colored lithograph in 1876, a century after the event it depicts: George Washington's army crossing the Delaware River on the night of December 25, 1776, just before the surprise attack on the Hessian garrison at Trenton, New Jersey. The firm's version set the scene in the cold darkness of the river, with ice-choked water and boats making their way toward the New Jersey shore. Prints like this one were sold widely in the late nineteenth century, and the image helped shape the popular picture of Washington as a daring commander during the Revolution's most desperate winter.
