Few battles of the Revolution are so closely tied to one commander as Trenton, and this engraving shows Washington at the December 26, 1776, attack on the Hessian garrison there, a surprise made possible by his crossing of the icy Delaware the night before. Illman Brothers engraved the print from a painting by E.L. Henry, working from an original owned by Charles J. Peterson. Images like this were popular in the decades after the Civil War, when Washington's wartime leadership was being retold for a national audience.
