This mezzotint reproduces John Trumbull's painting of George Washington on the battlefield at Trenton, New Jersey, a scene from the morning after the army crossed the Delaware on Christmas night, 1776. The original canvas was held by Yale College, and the engraving was made by W. Warner for the Philadelphia publishers J. Dainty & Flagg & Co. around 1845. Trumbull had served on Washington's staff during the Revolution, so the painting carries the authority of an artist who had known the general, and the print shows how popular images of the Revolution were being circulated in the decades before the Civil War.
