The print's title places this scene at the bridge in Trenton, New Jersey, where local women greeted George Washington. The title gives April 1739, but that date appears to be an error, since the welcome took place in April 1789, when Washington was traveling to New York for his inauguration as the first president. The women built a triumphal arch over the bridge and sang as he crossed, a gesture that became one of the best-known episodes of his journey. Because the record gives no date of its own, the scene is best read as a later rendering of that 1789 welcome.
