Trenton, New Jersey, is the setting, and the scene recalls a stop on Washington's journey to New York for his inauguration in April 1789. Local women greeted him with a triumphal arch of laurel and flowers, and young women in white strewed blossoms in his path and sang a welcome. The lithograph was made in the mid-1840s, more than fifty years after the event, when Washington's likeness appeared often in patriotic prints. The record associates it with the firm Kellogg & Thayer, though that attribution is unverified.
