Washington on horseback, receiving a salute on the field at Trenton, is a scene of ceremony rather than combat. The Trenton engagement of December 26, 1776, followed Washington's crossing of the Delaware River and surprised the Hessian garrison, a victory that lifted American spirits during a grim winter. The picture was painted by the Scottish artist John Faed, a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, and engraved by William Holl, and this impression was issued by the Kendall Bank Note Company of New York around 1860. Its mid-century origin says as much about how Americans wanted to remember the Revolution as it does about 1776.
