Federal Hall in New York City, where Washington took the oath on April 30, 1789, was the setting for this scene. Chancellor Robert R. Livingston administered the oath on the building's balcony before a crowd filling Wall Street. The print carries a 1899 copyright date, so it was made more than a century after the event, as a later commemorative view of a moment that had already become a national founding image. Its lower right corner bears a pencil inscription, "E.E. Eckstein," though the record notes that the catalog details come from an unverified shelflist card.
