Rembrandt Peale both painted the original likeness and drew this version himself on the lithographic stone, which was unusual for a printed portrait of the period, when several hands often stood between artist and buyer. Peale had sat with Washington from life and returned to that image for decades, so the print reflects a firsthand likeness rather than a copy of a copy. The printing came from Pendleton's establishment in Boston, one of the early American firms working in lithography, a process that had only recently reached the United States and offered a cheaper way to reproduce portraits for homes and schools. At roughly 52 by 43 centimeters, the sheet was sized to hang on a wall.
