Currier & Ives turned the British evacuation of New York on November 25, 1783 into a lithograph of Washington riding triumphantly back into the city, a scene the firm could sell to a public that still loved the Revolution's heroes. The print was issued around 1857, roughly seventy years after the event, so it reflects how later Americans remembered the moment rather than how it looked at the time. When the last British troops sailed from the harbor, Washington and his officers entered Manhattan to mark the end of the long occupation of the city, and the print presents that return as the peaceful close of the war.
