Washington stands at the center of a comparison between two winters: the hungry camp at Valley Forge in 1778 and a 1942 banquet, linked by the subject of political campaign money. Dated February 23, 1942, the day after Washington's birthday, the drawing uses the national holiday to comment on the Democratic National Committee's fundraising and the dinners it held to collect party funds. Editorial cartoonists of the period often borrowed Washington's reputation for sacrifice to judge contemporary politics, and this drawing is a clear example of that habit.
