Its French-language title, which styles Washington as President of the "République des etats-unis d'Amérique du nord," sets this print apart from the English-titled portraits on the board. The 1799 date in the title places it in the last year of Washington's life, when his name was widely known in Europe as a model of republican leadership. French printmakers in the revolutionary years often issued likenesses like this to honor the American republic. A shelflist card links the print to a name, Wolff, but that attribution is unverified, and the record has no separate date, so the title is the main clue to its age.
