This stipple engraving is one of the portraits of George Washington produced abroad, in a full-length view with the subject turned to the right. Stipple engraving builds tone from thousands of tiny dots rather than lines, which gave European printmakers a soft, painterly finish that suited the fashion for lifelike portraits of public figures. Washington's fame after the American Revolution made him a subject for engravers across Europe, who often copied likenesses from American or British paintings and sold the results to readers curious about the new republic's leader. The card gives no date, so the print's exact year remains uncertain.
