Few likenesses of George Washington spread as widely as the portrait Gilbert Stuart painted, and this bust-length engraving by J. Thomson, after that painting, shows the president facing left. Prints like this carried Stuart's image into books, newspapers and homes across the young republic, at a time when most Americans had never seen Washington in person. The caption card records no date, so the print is best read as one of many reproductions after the original rather than a record of a particular sitting. Stuart's 1790s likeness became the model for later images, including the one used on the one-dollar bill.
