A bust of George Washington shown in profile, facing left, is the subject of this engraving. The record gives no date, so the print is best read through its subject: sculptors and engravers in the late 1700s and 1800s produced many portraits of Washington, and busts modeled on his likeness were widely copied to honor him after his death in 1799. Engravings like this one circulated in books, almanacs and parlors, carrying his image to people who never saw him in person.
