George Washington appears here in profile, facing left, in the uniform he wore as commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, a detail that marks this engraving as a portrait of him in his military role rather than as a civilian statesman. Engravings like this were widely reproduced in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when printed likenesses of Washington circulated in books, almanacs and broadsides and helped shape how the public pictured the country's first president. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year of this plate is uncertain, but its fine line work reflects the engraving techniques common to that tradition.
